mosaique-mirecourtFounded during the first millenium on a peaceful river called the Madon, this town joined the Duchy of Lorraine in 1284 in which remained until 1766, when the Duchy was until with France.

In the hands of the Dukes of Lorraine, Mirecourt went through a prosperous period, developing the industries and crafts recognized today : Lace – mechanical instruments and being also the capital of Violin making.

The Museum of Violin and Bow Making

Discover a world music and craft exceptional where established touch, sound extracts, instruments to play for small and big enable you to grasp two essential Lorraine know-how, “lutherie” and the bow. Each year, a new exhibit tells how the hands of violin maker transform wood into music.

The house of the mechanical music and of the lace :

Browses more than two centuries of automation of the sound’s history where remarkable musical notations meet the mechanical ingenuity.

A journey in the eclectic directories of these instruments reveals alternately the music of recreation or brass band, those of the carnivals and popular dances without forgetting these surprising bends in the atmosphere of the American piano bars and the coffees of Flanders.

Exhibition called “lace, between conservation and transmission”
Based on the presentation of mats, upholstery and pieces of clothing, visitors are aware of the difficulty of maintaining this fragile textile heritage: how to prevent it from deteriorating?
They discover and then experiment with this ancestral knowledge with a touch made when materials are presented, and point tools.
The pieces presented are kindly provided by the association “Revival and promotion of lace in Mirecourt.”
